10g . no catalog . same host . backup recover & rename WITHOUT duplicate

I raised this on the OTN community:

"All I want to do I recover a backup to a new database on the same server without impinging in any way on the target database.

I.e. whether the target exists (and is up or not) or not.

Just from backup.

Is there a blow-by-blow account of this anywhere please?

I.e. that doesn't say 'just modfify the method for new name, new server'."

This elicited the response: "10g ,we have no option of duplicating without target connection."

Hence mine: "Which is why I'm exploring NON duplication, from a backup, on the same server, to a new database, where the original target database still exists.".
