Question about server load balancer for EM high availability

Hello

I'm trying to configure a highly available EM environment for EM 12c release 12.1.0.3.  We use F5 server load balancers, and my contact is telling me that my OMS nodes must be in the same subnet as the SLBs.  I have an existing OMS and I wanted to add another one, but the nodes I use are not in the same subnet as the SLBs.  Moving to a different subnet is a significant effort. 

Must my OMS nodes be in the same subnet as the SLBs?  I am a DBA, so my knowlege of SLBs is very limited, but a quick Google search turns up a mode of configuration labeled "routed mode", which does not call for this requirement.
