Oracle 8.1.7 client on Windows 7 64bit (yes it can be done)

Most of you probably don't care about this, but in my company we have a bad habit of using outdated software. Recently we needed to install the Oracle 8.1.7 client with the Enterprise management tools on a Windows 7 64bit system. The lack of any information on the internet regarding this situation was disappointing, so I am posting this just in case some other poor soul out there is having the same problem.

It turns out the solution is very simple, but I made it very difficult at first because I thought it had to be that way.

Simply run the Autorun.exe on the client install CD, no need to worry about compatibility modes.
