In Plant/Equipment Maintenance how is a Parent item established when adding Equipment?

As I try to add a piece of equipment to the Equipment Master Entry (P1201) the program requires a Parent Number so how do I enter a Parent Item? I have scoured the Plant/Equipment Maintenance manual but can't find any information about setting up the actual, virtual, or logical Parent Item. Any help would be appreciated.
