Purchasing Rebuildables

I want to purchase a rebuildable for inventory.  When I attempt to put the rebuildable number on the purchase requisition or purchase order it is asking me for a unit number.  The unit number being a serialized instance of the rebuildable.  What is the correct process to order replacements for these items?
