Difference between Default & Unregistered - Default document types

Hi,

What is the difference between 'Default' & 'Unregistered - Default' document types? Is it mandatory to define document sequencing for both types? If we define VAT document sequencing for both types & not for the others, then how system will pick document sequencing?
