Why do we allocate channel for maintenace to delete obsolete backups.

Hi,

I need to delete some old RMAN backups from SBT_TAPE. I am allocating the channel without maintenance clause and it is working fine. Why do we  allocate channel for maintenace to delete obsolete backups?
