Conditioning a Total separator line

I have a BI Publisher report that conditions whether to show totals for a column or not show - dependent on user selection.  I would like to use a separator line above the total field but have not found a way to condition it based on the same criteria as showing the field.  I tried the Word top border but it remains even if the show total for that column is no.  Adding a graphic line above it on a different line creates too much white space.  Any ideas on how to get a separator line to print based on
