Alerts without notification rule

We are getting duplicate alerts for our daily jobs one for the notification rule and the other with the job owner. Both notifications come in at the sametime when the job succeeds or fails. How can I disable the alert without the notification rule. And if the job owner is getting the notification by default how do I disable that feature as well, we are currently setup to get alerts from notification rules.
