Project Manufacturing - Model/Unit numbers

Gurus,

Has anybody successfully used model/unit number functionality in Oracle Project Manufacturing? We are starting a new implementation for an Engineer to Order company with projects having long lead time, some times running into several years. I will appreciate if you can provide me some insight into what we are getting into with model/unit numbers? What I read in the documents, it sounded like a great fit, but we don't want to get into something where we will spend years in fixing broken functionalities. Our target is 12.2.3.
