Excel Templates don't work in 12.1.3 but will they in the future?

I had a requirement to produce a list of open POs in Oracle EBS and email an excel spreadsheet to various departments. I was under the impression that this could be done in Oracle 12.1.3, but should have known that all documentation pointed to this only being done in the desktop version of BI Publisher. After logging an Oracle SR, I was directed to this group and it seems to confirm that my excel template (in a excel xls file as opposed to a word rtf file) is a no-go. Is there any possibility happening with some patch in the
