LTO4 Tape performance - need some help understanding

Hi everyone,

I have a T4-2 that I am performing backup/restore tests with and I'm running into a brick wall concerning performance.  We have a customer that is restoring their system to our Disaster Recovery server via a LTO4 tape.   They use the command "tar cvf - /<datapath> | dd of=/dev/rmt/0 bs=64k" to create the backup.  The backup is about 770GB in size.

On my T4-2 server I have a Tandberg HH LTO-4 SCSI attached tape drive.   This connects to the T4-2's Ultra320 SCSI card, using U320 Cable and Terminator.

When I restore the tape, it takes a little over 9 hours to extract the files to the server.   I used the "iostat" command to check the performance and I am getting about 26.1  M r/s
