Implementing Sourcing without iSupplier Portal

I am implementing Sourcing without iSupplier Portal. Will the buyer have to register all suppliers or can the supplier user self-registration methods be used? Using a proxy server outside firewall for external access rather than hosting complete server in DMZ.
