Repair Scenario Help

A customer item is received into depot repair, say item # 123. A repair is made on item # 123, maybe a firmware upgrade or component change. Due to the modification, we want to send the part back to the customer with a different part#, say #134.

How do we perform the transaction in depot, and how do we move the item from receiving subinventory to wip and back to subinventory to ship out,
