Workspace Pages

My goal is to utilize the "Workspace Pages" area on the EPM homepage to provide a link to an excel document.

I have created a workspace page, and when I click on the link it and the workspace template box is visible and I am prompted to either open or save the excel file that is trying to open.  This is good.  However, when I click  "open" i get prompt for a user name and password and it says connect to server xyz.  If I just hit cancel, it goes away, then the excel file attempts to open.  Then an excel popup comes up with the message "the file you are trying to open is in a different format specified by
