starting gnome panel in oel 6.5

in Linux Operating System (MOSC) Question

in previous version of oel (5.9 and 6.4) , this command " /usr/bin/gnome-session&" used to start a gnome session that had the application panel on top, when I connect the same way (using exceed) to the 6,.5 server I don't get the top panel..  I checked and the gnome desktop application is installed.  I can get the kde desktop by using  "/usr/bin/startkde"  ?   See the attached file for the gnome desktop using oel 6.4
