How big is a Large, huge install base?

Our install base has approximately 3.6 million records and users believe that this is causing  queries to run slow and the data is difficult to search.   I do not know the exact queries, yet. However, I believe this is not that large of an install base and was wondering what the size of other install bases were and if there are performance problems associated with IB's much larger than 3.6 million records
