Global deployment of managers - impact on direct reports in workflow

It looks like when you use global deployments to transfer a manager with direct reports, the linkage between the directs and the manager is broken.  The direct reports remain attached to the now terminated assignment of that manager.  This breaks workflow as it doesn't want to be routed to a terminated person.  I have to go into the records of each direct report, re-select their manager again and then save the record.  Is there a way to do that automatically?
