Trail files between source and target

Hi

Do the trail file sequence numbers need to match between source and target? say if the source has generated 100 files does the target also need to have 100 files. I have noticed in my setups that this is not the case but I hear otherwise. It appears if the numbers do not match, then it can cause extra files to build up locally and potentially fill the mount point. Does anyone concur with this?
