UDC code length - how increase? Can I unload data and reload with greater length?

We have our UDC length in E1 set at 3.  We have maxed out the total number/size of UDCs and we have a few hundred additional UDCs we want to load but we cannot because of the length.

I know we can change the length in E1 from 3 to a higher number (max is 10?) but I read that it is not recommended as to how the data is stored and displayed and used.

I will say that we changed the length from 3 to 4 but now any 3 digit (or 2 or 1) UDC codes show as an error on the form even though they still exist in the table.
