Is it possible to just install a new oracle home (software only) before the grid instance is upgrade

We are gearing up for an out-of-place upgrade from 11.2.0.3.22 to 11.2.0.4.6.  I'd like to save some time by installing the software for the 11.2.0.4 before we start the upgrade but it seems to check the currently running grid instance.  Once it detects the grid instance is older than what I'm installing it won't let me continue.  Is there a way around this?  I have no intentions of upgrading the RDBMS database until grid is upgraded first, I'm just trying to save time.
