Key flexfield segment lengths - entered vs. maximum allowed

Hi

does anyone have any experience bad or otherwise with having a 6 character segment length in the GL accounting flexfield, but only populating it with 4 characters for transaction entries?

Client wants a 6 character Company segment but wants to post at a 4 character level (child) - using the 6 characters to create a LE hierarchy parent to represent a number of 4 character child Co. codes!
