Instance Hang During Shutdown

Hi ,

I have a legacy system which is currently running in Oracle 9i with 8i compatible mode. Recently the instance has started to behave erratically. In the sense , it will suddenly stop allowing any connections to the database. Even after we restart the listener.  When we run the shutdown immediate command the Database is Closed and Dismounted Normally but after this the instance does not shutdown. We need to issue a abort and restart the database.

Any Ideas what could be the problem here?
