How do you best sequence cost center (row) security, since field is alpha numberic?

I'm trying to determine how best to design our ranges for cost center (row) security, since it is an alpha numberic field and we do use both.  Would you do A through 999999999999 or 1 to ZZZZZZZZZZZZ to include all cost centers?  Does it sequence by the alpha or the numberic first?  Please note we use a combination of alpha numberic, as well as 3 to 12 characters.  Your feedback is greatly appreciated.
