backup database plus archivelog performance

Guys,

Please I need help to perform a first rman backup. The env I´m supporting is 11.2.01 no patches applyed and theres no disk space availabe in the database server whitch is running Suse 11, so in order to perform this database backup it will be held in an external HD (Seagate 3TB). In my first try I checked the V$RMAN_BACKUP_JOB_DETAILS view and the elapsed time was of almost 4 hours (failed due to energy breakdown) for the first 60GB of 250GB database amount space. Please can anyone kindly help me with any information that can optimize performance because if I´m
