How to prevent number increment even didn't save the section

Hi,

Is it possible to prevent the increment of numbering even user didn't save the section.

Right now, let assume user want to create a new ECR, the user click on the number and it will auto generate the next valid number (ABC001), however by accidentally the user close the "create new" window. At that time, ABC001 already used and when user go back and open the "create new" window, it will generate ABC002.

Can this be solve? Is there any workaround? Just to prevent the increment number if there is no really save/create new had been done.
