Voiding a duplicate Payroll Check

We have a duplicate check for one of our employees.  Instead of voiding and reissuing a stale dated check (the original check was dated in January 2014) payroll changed the check number to reissue it, this caused a duplicate check to show up with an August date.  We voided the originial check from Janaury but are unsure if we can void the check from August and just reisssue the check. (Normally if a check needs reissued within the same year payroll would void the original and reissue a new check but for whatever reason that wasn't done this time causing
