Text index in separate tablespace and/or use of external data source

I am investigating the benefits of storing the Oracle text index for WCC in a separate tablespace than other tables.  Are there benefits especially since I hope to be using Oracle ASM which I thought would help manage i/o contention.   Is this common practice?

In the event we do decided to put the text index to its own tablespace I put a SR to Oracle support asking how.  I referenced an Oracle Text document 150453.1 that discusses using basic_storage preference to set the tablespace for the different structures in the index (i.e. i_table_clause  is Parameter clause for dr$
