Functionality of negotiation Invitation replies

I would like to know the intended functionality of negotiation invitation messages - The 'Yes' 'No' links provided to acknowledge participation - are these meant to email back to the internal system and update the participation in the system somehow, or do they merely produce an email to the buyer that sent the negotiation invitation?
