How does the VM Agent work?

I am new to all this and I can't seem to find some specifics that I am trying to figure out.  I read in the documentation that the agent is automatically installed which is fine.

I know that the agent is capable of performing all roles (Server Pool Master, Utility Server and VM Server) on one server so I'm just wondering if I "split" them out how do I know each role is assigned to a server?

At what point does the agent define the "role" (Server Pool Master, Utility Server or VM Server) that gets implemented?

I don't think I'm interested in controlling it but I would like to know "when" these roles are set.  Then, maybe if I know when this gets set I can control it?  Does this "role" get configured when the management server contacts the agent or when the server pool is created or at some other point?

Howdy, Stranger!
