We want to switch on 'Autoaccounting' in projects. All historical costing entries are done manually

We want to switch on 'Autoaccounting' in projects. All historical costing entries are done manually in GL. Please share if you know what happens to historical data in Projects when 'Autoaccounting' is switched on. Old periods are already closed. Infact please let me know the best practices for this.
