Changing batch numbering parameter from automatic to manual.

We are testing out manual batch numbers.  We have switched the flag from automatic, but when we try to release a planned order (from the plan) to a work order, it doesn't generate the work order.

Is it possible that we are missing another setting somewhere?  Is it possible to release work orders from the plan if we have batch numbering set to manual?
