format > analyze > read error: "Drive may be reserved or has been removed, aborting surface analysis

I have a volume that has bad blocks that i need to repair/fix.

On doing surface analyzing of the disk to determine the blocks, I encounter the error below:

"Drive may be reserved or has been removed, aborting surface analysis"

Then analysing stops.

Please help on what could be cause of this and how to resolve it.
