How do I use Lot Control with a receipt

We would like to track Lot Control as part of the receipt process.  This would be a lot/expiration date from the manufacturer that is used for medical supplies. I was able to use serial numbers from Serial Item Control check box on the Item Master but when I put in Lot Control, it is looking for a value from a view.  I would not like the Lot Control field to be a controlled field.
