Default Yield Subinventory & Material Exceptions Form

I would like to default the yield subinventory and locator for a series of item numbers which are byproducts from process batches.  These are not lot-controlled items and are set as automatic by step.  When I set the default yield subinventory on the org item, the material exceptions page does not come up for entering actual values.  The transaction is just completed with the planned quantities.  I want a method of defaulting the subinventory while still allowing for the user to update the actual quantities that are yielded.

Ideas?
