Administering ASM without root privileges? Is it possible?

Does ASM administration require root permissions for everything that has to be done in ASM? 

If no, than what are the task that absolutely require root privileges?

My understanding is that almost everything can be done as user oracle, since ASM is mostly administered by DBAs, and only a few things require root access.
