Is the use of Directed Put-away functionality in Advanced Warehousing in E1 dependent on the setup o

I see documentation that implies that locational dimensions are required to be setup for Adv Warehousing to function, but are the Item's dimensions absolutely required on all items for functionality such as Directed Put-away to work?
