Related Item and PTO (Packs)

Hi.  We try to have a Superseded item for the majority of our item numbers.  This is to ensure if we have something on back back order, our CSR's (Customer Service Reps) are able to easily offer a customer an alternate item.  We also offer quite a few packs (PTO) items.  However with a PTO item, the Related Item does not work.  You are not able to select a Superseded item on a PTO item in the Related Item window.

I am just wondering if anyone else has come across this?  If so what did you do?  A few years ago when we first looked at this we were advised not to do any kind of customization or personalization.  Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated.
