How is it best to deal with long Lot Numbers?

When we buy inventory from a third party we have no control over the length of the Lot Number assigned to it.

Within JDE there is a limit of 15 characters.  When we receive a product that, for example, has a Lot Number that is 20 characters we have to drop some of the characters to allow it to fit within the system.

Now we have a scenario where the stock has a Lot Number in the system that does not match what is printed on the product's packaging.

Has anyone come up with a way to store the original Lot Number so that the documentation can then match what is despatched and also allow retention of traceability?
