What set ups/roles needed to get the update privilegde for item instances in Install base

The users have 'CSI_NORMAL_USER' and 'CSI_READ_ONLY' roles assigned to them.They are able to create the item instances but do not have the update privilege on the item instances.Please help what needs tio be done to get the UPDATE privilegde.
