raw and block device

Please help me understand what is raw and block device and why did Oracle desupport RAW devices from ASM in  11gR2?

I understand that raw devices can be directly written by ASM without filesystem which is not the case with block device.However,if there is no ASM then also there are raw and block devices in OS so not sure what exactly is difference between raw and block because luns would be created on both
