To use or not to use, that is the question with synonyms

We are reviewing our standards and are having a debate on the use of synonyms for our user and application user accounts. Some of our DBAs use synonyms for all user and application users. They believe that the user should not have to know the schema that contains the data or don't want to type in the schema name all the time. While we have others that don't believe in their use excepts for extreme cases (bug work a rounds).

We would like to hear what other organizations have standardized on with the use of synonyms.
