If you archive AR invoice transactions, are you able to reuse the archived transaction numbers again

We are unable to interface new AR transactions into Oracle due to duplicate transaction ids.  The duplicates belonged to a subsidiary company that we sold a year ago and no longer need the AR transactions in our system.  I have been asked to investigate archiving those old transactions in hopes that we could then import the new trasactions with the same #s.  If we archive those old transactions, will we be able to reuse the transaction ids & transactions numbers?
