Overriding document numbers

There is a current business practice of overriding the transaction numbers (especially sales orders) rather than allowing the Next Number to be assigned.  What are the implications of this action?  In my experience with JDE, this was a huge NO-NO as records could be overridden and lost.  Is this still the case?
