Updating Interim Checks

In the past we have updated interim checks with the regular pay cycle that includes the iterim, we now have the need to update the iterim sooner.  At one time we were told it wasn't a good idea to update interim checks unless they were included in the regular pay cycle, but I've been reading that we can update the interim checks either interactively or in a payroll cycle only for iterim checks.  Which of the two methods are preferred?  If we run a separate pay cycle, can that be done at anytime with pay ending/pay date of whatever the
