configure Internal/external tier on the same node

Background:

Lets suppose E-Business Suite R12 is deployed with four middle tier where two nodes (node1 & node2) are internal(for intranet users) and two nodes (node3 & node4) are external (for internet users – iSupplier, iProcurement, iRecruitment..). 

In normal course, external tier ought to be in DMZ but for example, in our current topology, all the tiers are effectively internal only as neither sits in DMZ…

Question:

Can we configure Internal/external tier on the same node as internal tier with application tier meant for both tiers under distinct filesystems?

Please provide the note ID if any. Please suggest.
