Why unit of measure must by the smallest?

Hy,

I want to create an item with 2 unit of measures: grams and kilograms. Why is better to setup primary unit of measure grams(smallest unit of measure) when i'm using this item just in kilograms?(i want to know the weight in grams just informative)
