How soft and hard user limits affect oracle?

Hello,

We are on Solaris 10.

We have been experiencing out of process memory errors recently and upon investigation, I noticed that the hard user limit was set to unlimited.

However the soft limit was set to 8192.

I asked our sys admin to change the soft value to unlimited as well for user oracle.

However he replied that this only affects the shell and shouldn't impact oracle.

I would really appreciate if someone could clarify how this impacts oracle if at all.
