Channel allocation

Hi Gurus, if i'm connected to RMAN catalog do i still need to explicitly allocate SBT channels for the restoring the datafile or tablespace? i always have confusion ....when do i need to explicitly allocate the channel even though we have persistent configuration setting for the channels in controlfile? Thanks
