What is sub ledger accounting in R12 ?

Hi ,

I'm not able to understand the concept of Sub ledger accounting in R12.

can any provide some details about this Sub ledger accounting and also where do we need to use this? Is it applicable for AP module or any module can we use ?

Please provide some more details to clear understanding of this concept.
